SRM Tech opens Chennai offshore centre for Japan Wave

Chennai , May 23

SRM Technologies, a Chennai-based software company, has established an offshore development centre in the city for Japan Wave. The centre will work on enhancing the DRM (digital rights management) product range of the Japanese company, according to Mr S. Chandrashekar, CEO, SRM Technologies.

About Rs 90 lakh has been invested in the centre, which would deploy 10 people and another 10 onsite in Japan. Revenue from both operations is likely to be about Rs 4.5 crore this year for SRM Technologies, which has revenues of about Rs 31 crore, and most of it from Japan, he told newspersons.

DRM tech

For the last four years, SRM Technologies has been associated with the Rs 45-crore Japan Wave as its technology partner in developing the DRM technology. This technology helps subscribers download movies and songs from the Internet and store them in a personal computer for three days, he said.

According to Mr Chandrashekar, the technology segments the content into two parts. One part, which makes up about 99 per cent of a film, is copied onto a compact disc and handed over to the cinema theatre where the movie is to be screened.

The remaining 1 per cent has to be downloaded from the Internet.

A proprietary player, containing the software for integrating the content on the CD and that downloaded from the Internet, will then feed the complete film to a digital projector for screening.

The content to be downloaded from the Internet is in encrypted form, making it impossible to copy.

Individuals can also download movies or songs on to a PC using the technology, he said.

Japan Wave plans to launch the DRM technology in India and successfully experimented with it in a couple of theatres. The company has about 2.5 lakh subscribers in Japan, he said.
