Maran offers probe into BSNL-MTNL functioning

New Delhi , Aug. 24

The Union Communication and IT Minister, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, on Thursday offered to conduct an enquiry into allegations that BSNL and MTNL are resorting to objectionable practices to favour private telecom operators.

In a letter written to Mr Sitaram Yechury, the Telecom Minister said, "I would request you to kindly let me have details that the Unions (employee unions of BSNL and MTNL) have provided to you so that I can immediately have an enquiry conducted in the matter and put an end to such tendencies, if any."

Earlier in the day, Mr Yechury had said in Rajya Sabha that the unions of the two telecom PSUs were claiming that that they were not being allowed to set up additional towers for improving cellular services. He wanted to know whether it was being done under pressure from private companies.

"This is regarding your statement in the Rajya Sabha that the Unions of BSNL and MTNL have informed you about the objectionable practices of certain sections in these organisations deliberately favouring private companies at the cost of public sector companies, who are thereby placed at a disadvantage. You may recollect that I have met you a number of times earlier, but you had not shared this information with me," Mr Maran said. The Minister had earlier said in the Rajya Sabha that such allegations would demoralise employees of BSNL and MTNL.
