Port, dock workers threaten stir

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Sept. 13

The five federations of Indian port and dock workers have threatened to go on nation-wide agitation if the Government failed to settle the issue of payment of bonus and other pending matters.

Mr S.R. Kulkarni, President of the All India Port and Dock Workers Federation, said over one lakh port and dock workers employed at all the 11 major ports were agitated over the delay to approve the agreement concluded between IPA and the five federations.

As per the agreement in May 2006, the workers are entitled to receive 20 per cent bonus by way of PLR commencing from the 2002-03 fiscal.

He also invited the attention of the Shipping Ministry on the other demands of the workers, including enhancement of retirement age, common pension regulations and merger of 50 per cent D.A. with basic pay.
