National Jute Board bill planned

Visakhapatnam , Sept. 24

The Bill for establishment of National Jute Board is to be introduced in the winter session of Parliament, according to Mr S. Sudhakara Reddy, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour, Employment and Textiles.

Mr Reddy was speaking at a press meet here on Saturday after visiting Vizianagaram, a major jute-growing district on Friday. He said the Committee had so far visited Meghalaya, West Bengal, Orissa and parts of Andhra Pradesh to elicit the opinions of farmers, the trade and industry on the formation of a jute board.

Better representation

He said that though there were several committees on jute and agencies involved in export promotion, a jute board was required to encompass all activities. Mr Reddy added that the board would help represent the farmers better.

He said jute was mainly being grown in the north-coastal districts of AP, but the yields as well as quality of jute were poor in comparison with the crop grown in West Bengal.

"The yields in AP are in the range of 10-12 quintals per acre against 18-24 quintals per acre in Bengal. The farmers also complained of the lack of quality seed and seed scarcity," he pointed out. The wage structure in the jute industry was also not uniform. In some of the jute mills in Vizianagaram district, it was as low as Rs 35 per day as against Rs 130 or so per day in Guntur mills. All these problems would have to be addressed by the board, he added.
