Intel unveils microprocessors with 4 chips

Our Bureau

Chennai , Nov. 14

Intel today launched a family of microprocessors with four chips inside each - chips that will be the heart of technologies used in digital media creation and high-end gaming.

Called the quad core family of processors, they include the Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5300 series targeted at servers and the Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processor targeted at the desktop.

Mr R. Sivakumar, Country Manager, Intel India, said, "The quad core microprocessors give between 1.5 and 2 times better performance compared to dual-core (or, two-core) processors and about 4.5 times better than single core ones." Several cores inside one chip allow a microprocessor to handle more tasks at the same time.

Interestingly, the quad core processors consume the same power as the dual core ones do. The power consumption is roughly equal to that of an 80-watt bulb.

Mr Amit Gupta, head of VFX and Animatron, at Prime Focus, which is one of the first customers to buy the quad-core powered chips in India, said, "We are in the business of digital post-production for movies. Typically, using such processors helps reduce the time taken from a few weeks to a few hours."

Intel's India team also helped in validating the architecture of these new processors.
