New Projects States - Tamil Nadu Gemini Comm plans RFID unit near Chennai Raja Simhan T.E.
Chennai , Nov 23 The Chennai-based Gemini Communication Ltd plans to set up a manufacturing facility at an SEZ at Sriperumbudur near here instead of Himachal Pradesh. In April, it had announced the Himachal Pradesh project at a cost of Rs 20 crore. The company will now set up a Rs 25-crore facility at Sriperumbudur to manufacture radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and related products. It has cited logistics and availability of manpower in Himachal Pradesh as the main reasons for the proposed shift in location. "We are close to finalising the space at Sriperumbudur," the CEO, Mr Ram Kumar, told Business Line. RFID is a technology for storing and remote retrieving of data using devices called RFID tags or transponders. Gemini offers customers customised RFID consulting and project management services. Tax incentives were attractive at Himachal Pradesh, but there would be similar tax exemptions at the SEZ for exports, he said. According to Mr Kumar, the company first plans to set up a facility at a lease premise at Thirumazhisai, near the city, and then move to Sriperumbudur once the facility is ready. "We would like to start production at Thirumazhisai before January-end." In April, Gemini had made a preferential allotment of five lakh warrants, convertible into as many shares, to raise resources to set up the Himachal Pradesh facility. Meanwhile, Gemini secured a Rs 20-crore order from Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu to computerise 6,096 villages in the State. This is part of the State's Rural Development initiative to computerise village panchayats and IT-enable administration and e-governance at that level. This will also help villages in easy access to records and civil services enhancement, according to a company communication to the BSE.
