Bangalore Jan. 29 Magma Design Automation Inc, a semiconductor design software provider, strengthened its presence in India with the inauguration of its new facility here on Monday. The 40,000-sq-ft facility is the company's third R&D centre in the country, after Noida and Mumbai.

The company's Mumbai facility was a result of its acquisition of Knights Technology in November last year.

According to Mr Rajeev Madhavan, Chairman and CEO, Magma Design Automation Pvt Ltd, the company is "growing at a great pace," and is making significant investments in R&D, product engineering and applications engineering globally.

Increasing headcount

The company plans to increase its headcount in India to 200 by March; its global staff strength is about 900, which it hopes to increase to 1,000 soon.

"The Indian strength is 20 per cent of our global strength. We hope to increase it to 25 per cent soon," said Mr Roy Jewell, the company's Chief Operating Officer.

The company recently acquired an R&D facility in Beijing and has two more facilities in that country.

"We are looking to expand in China this year," Mr Madhavan said.

Addressing presspersons, Mr Anand Anandkumar, Managing Director, said, "Our investments in 2006-07 will be $8 million-10 million (all three operations combined)." He said that the company invests heavily in universities "to ensure the availability of good talent at the entry level".

Currently, the company is working with 18 universities. From June this year, 32 universities, including niche institutions, would be included in the list, Mr Anandkumar said.

With these three centres, the company hopes to provide better support to its growing customer base in India, he added.
