Automobile sales on a roll in January

New Delhi Feb. 1 The New Year has started on a positive note for automobile majors with almost all companies registering a significant jump in sales in January. The month has also proved to be a record breaking one for a few.

Car market leader Maruti Udyog announced that its January sales have broken the all-time monthly sales record for the company. The company recorded highest-ever monthly domestic sales in January at 62,248 vehicles, a growth of 28.3 per cent over the corresponding month last year. The latest figures surpassed the previous high of 61,141 vehicles sold in March 2006.

Its rival Hyundai, meanwhile, saw a sizeable 49 per cent jump in sales in the month to 17,460 units. The company said sales of its flagship model Santro jumped by 78 per cent in January.

General Motors India registered a 46 per cent growth in sales in January 2007 compared to the corresponding period last year. It sold 3776 units in January against 2592 units during the corresponding period last year.

Meanwhile, carmaker Honda Siel Cars India posted a 31 per cent growth in its vehicle sales during the month at 6,013 units.

Ford India stated that it sold 4,623 units in the month of January 2007 - the third best month ever in sales. Previously, the company posted record sales in March 2006 and January 2006 with 5929 units and 5173 units sold respectively.

Not to be left behind, two-wheeler makers too saw the sales counters ticking in January. Hero Honda reported a 19.3 per cent increase in sales at 2,97,554 units backed by the success of its new models including CBZ X-treme, Glamour and CD Deluxe.

TVS Motor Company recorded a growth of 7 per cent in total two wheelers during January 2007 over the corresponding period in the previous year. The total two wheeler sales in January 2007 stood at 121,147 units compared to 112,910 units recorded during January 2006.
