Internet Info-Tech - New Products & Services AOL launches Indian portal Our Bureau
Bangalore April 26 America Online, better known as AOL and a division of the media house Time Warner, has joined the list of online giants offering e-mail, messenger and other products for the Indian market. Stepping in years after brands Google, MSN, Rediff and Yahoo have established themselves, AOL offers unlimited storage in its e-mail inbox, an improved instant messenger and video content. "Indian users need choice. It's still early days and we will tailor AOL.in to fit what the consumer is looking for. We have a blend of offerings on what is relevant today with a peek into what the future holds in store for online Indian users," said Mr Ron Grant, President and COO, AOL, speaking at the launch in the city on Thursday. AOL hopes to attract the 45 million consumers on the Internet in India. "This number will grow by another 100 million to 147 million in the next three years. We wanted to step in and take advantage of the growth opportunity," said Mr Manish Dhir, who was named Executive Vice-President in charge of AOL's international operations in January. He is based in the company's centre in Bangalore. Calling India a "critical market," Mr Grant said AOL would ramp up its employee headcount in its Bangalore centre. "We will invest heavily to fulfil expectations users have of a service provider. India will play a central role to expansion plans. The company plans to roll out its sites in multiple languages in the future and tie up with operators to offer mobile services."
