ECO-FRIENDLY: Mr Ashutosh Vaidya, Vice-President, Wipro Personal Computing, launching eco-friendly laptops and desktops in Bangalore on Thursday. — G. R.N. Somashekar

Bangalore June 14 Wipro Infotech launched a new range of eco-friendly desktops and laptops on Thursday. The Wipro Greenware range is compliant with RoHS (Restriction of hazardous substances) directive, thereby reducing e-waste.

"At present, eight products — five desktops and three notebooks — are 100 per cent RoHS-compliant. By the yearend, we want to ensure that the entire product range of laptops and desktops is RoHS-compliant," said Mr Ashutosh Vaidya, Vice President, Wipro Personal Computing, at the launch of Wipro Greenware.

No premium pricing

Mr Vaidya said though the company incurred additional cost to manufacture RoHS compliant products it was not charging a premium, as the company wants to encourage the use of eco-friendly products. Wipro has set up its e-waste management process called Wipro Green Computing, which spans across its product lifecycle, from designing and manufacturing to the final disposal.

Wipro's PC would be free of hazardous material such as brominated flame retardants (BFR), PVCs and heavy metals like lead, cadmium and mercury that have been regularly used in computer manufacture so far. "We will choose only RoHS components from our vendors," Mr Vaidya said.

Welcoming Wipro's initiative even in the absence of government legislation on the issue, Greenpeace Toxics Campaigner Mr Ramapati Kumar, who was present at the launch, hoped this would lead the way in phasing out chemicals like BFRs and PVC. Greenpeace appealed to electronics industry to design products that are free from hazardous substances.

Mr Vaidya said Wipro Infotech targets 50 per cent rise in sales and revenues for FY08. The company had shipped about 1.7 lakh units of desktops and laptops in the previous year.
