Our Bureau

New Delhi June 17 Nivio, a service that allows subscribers to rent software applications from companies including Microsoft and Adobe on a monthly subscription basis, was launched in India today.

The Windows-based online desktop service would also allow subscribers to access educational content and expandable storage for pictures, music and data.

"The service allows global access to a personal virtual desktop from any Internet-connected device," said Mr Sachin Duggal, founder and CEO.

"Being device technology agnostic, Nivio will be useful to all desktop users in accessing Windows desktop remotely through Mac, Windows and even some handhelds and will provide them with a real desktop experience." While the service is free for the first 30 days, the subscription charges would be Rs 199 per month for academic users and Rs 399 for other users.

"We currently have 2,500 users and are targeting 100,000 users by the end of the year. Nivio will be launched in the UK next week," he said. In India, Nivio is targeting the students who cannot afford a personal computer and have daily education requirements on computer. The second target category is executives on the move, Mr Duggal said.
