Printo in talks with global photo sharing sites

Bangalore June 21 Now, you can get a photo album printed right from your desktop. Users of photosharing sites such as Yahoo's Flickr, Hewlett-Packard's Snapfish, Shutterfly and Photobucket can soon avail of Printo's service that will deliver a printed photobook to your home, with just a click.

None of these sites offer a print service in India, but are popularly used in Europe and the US.

"Many companies might wonder why they aren't offering such services themselves in India. They have not thought of it yet. We want to be the first," smiled Mr Manish Sharma, CEO, Printo.

Printo Document Services is a Bangalore-based start up with a print retail chain across the country.

Photo books, calendars

Beginning with Flickr, Printo hopes to draw the digicam users into sharing their photos in the real world. This service is three months' away from realisation. Printo's corporate Web site currently lets users send snaps to be printed onto products such as photo books or photo calendars. However, to draw the masses, it plans to go where the consumers are — to sites where photos are stored and shared.

"We are in talks with global photo sharing sites and want to offer a print service here," said Mr Sharma. Printouts of single snaps will not be offered, he said. Products such as photobooks, photocalendars and customised wedding invites would be offered in the service.

This could be a killer app that could spin the printing market. "It's a pricing issue," he noted. A photo calendar would cost Rs 350.

Indians — especially the young crowd with disposable incomes — are experimenting more with online services. Train and airline ticketing have become huge successes. E-commerce Web sites are drawing more and more users, who are willing to pay more for a product just for the convenience factor.

Printo has six outlets in the country, and will grow them to 250 in the next three years. It also plans to set up stores in China, S.E. Asia and theWest Asia. The company offers door delivery services.
