Chennai, Aug. 22

Six more vendors supplying components to mobile handset manufacturer Nokia will commence operations at the Nokia Telecom SEZ park, Sriperumbudur, by mid-2008, according to sources in the company.

At present Perlos Corporation (supplier of electro-mechanical modules), Salcomp (charger manufacturer) and Foxconn Electronics (producer of cell phone body design) have set up shop at the park.

Battery issue

When asked if one of these vendors were replacing the faulty Nokia branded BL-5C batteries, currently in news for their overheating characteristic, a senior company official said no.

“The deal with Matsushita (the Japanese company which manufactured about 4.6 crore faulty batteries) will continue. They will replace these batteries,” he said.

Nokia received about 60 lakh enquiries globally as a result of the advisory it issued to the public. Of these, about 3 lakh enquiries belong to the batch of faulty batteries and the company would replace them, officials said. Currently about 95,000 batteries have been dispatched to customers.

When asked if the battery issue had affected the company’s sales in recent days, a senior official said no. “It is business as usual.”

Healthcare centre

The President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, was at the company’s Sriperumbudur premises today to lay the foundation stone of a healthcare centre that will be operational by mid-2008.

The 30-bed centre would cater to employees of all companies in the telecom SEZ park as well as residents of Kancheepuram and Sriperumbudur.

Earlier today, Mr Kallasvuo called on the State Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, at the latter’s residence.
