Anil Sasi New Delhi, Aug. 26 Chinese ready-made garments have clocked a 92 per cent surge in imports into India during the first eleven months of the last fiscal. Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh have moved in to the second slot in key import segments such as cotton yarn and fabrics, readymade garments and home textiles. In case of imports of readymade garments, Chinese imports shot up 91.77 per cent during April-February 2006-07, according to latest Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics figures. According to garment industry players, the surge in the imports of finished products such as ready made garments has been egged on by the appreciating rupee, making imports into India more competitive for countries, where currencies have not been hardening as much. Nepal’s imports into India, which according to industry insiders is mainly Chinese origin items, accounted for 13.13 per cent of the garments imports.
