TRAI asked to fix minimum tariff for mobile service providers

Tiruchi, Nov. 25 The Union Ministry of Information Technology and Communications has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to fix minimum tariff for mobile phone service providers.

Stating this to the media here on Saturday, the Union Minister for Information Technology and Communications, Mr A. Raja, said that the fixation of tariff would benefit customers to a great extent.

He also said that his Ministry was exploring the possibility of introducing the ‘number portability’, ‘Y-max’, and ‘3G’ technology to benefit customers all over the country. Number portability has already been introduced in metros such as Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, and New Delhi.

Against the total available capacity of 100 MHZ, about 35 MHZ had been utilised by the mobile phone service-providers and 250 million mobile connections had been provided.

The Ministry was exploring the possibility of enhancing its capacity utilisation so as to increase the number of mobile phone connections.

Pointing out that the Ministry would resist monopoly in communication technology, he said that a plan to open the doors for more competitors was under active consideration. Banks had been advised to utilise the rural post offices as their agents for marketing their business.

To a question on the Special Economic Zone project in Perambalur, Mr Raja said that a helipad would come up in Perambalur as part of the SEZ project to be developed by GVK.
