GMR Holdings unveils Delhi IPL team logo

In talks with other possible sponsors

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Feb.19 GMR Holdings, which owns Indian Premier League’s Delhi franchise, unveiled the logo for the team, which was named Delhi Daredevils, here on Tuesday.

According to Mr B. Vanchi, Senior Director and Group Advisor, GMR,“The GMR group sees two great opportunities in the city of Delhi — one to create a world class airport infrastructure by 2010.

“The other is to create a social asset for the people of Delhi through this Twenty20 format which brings entertainment and cricket together.”

Although the team, which is expected to include and be led by Virender Sehwag, is likely to be a vehicle for the GMR brand, Mr Vanchi said the company was in talks with other possible sponsors. The company said it would make whatever investment was required to build the brand and the team. Mr Rajeev Shukla, BCCI Vice-President, said he hoped to see Sehwag being given ‘iconic’ status and be included in the Delhi team when it played its first match on April 19.

‘Formidable team’

Mr Arun Jaitley, President, Delhi and District Cricket Association, pointed out that Delhi was the Ranji winner this year and Uttar Pradesh was the runner up, and the Delhi Daredevils, picked up from both these talent pools, would make a formidable team.

IPL’s CEO, Mr Sundar Raman, said there was huge commercial opportunities for the franchises depending on how they chose to leverage talent, ground activation and branding opportunities.

The IPL itself is to unveil its new O&M designed campaign in the first week of March.
