ESPN STAR Sports gets Australian Open rights for 7 more years

New Delhi, Feb. 26 ESPN STAR Sports (ESS) has a new seven-year contract for TV broadcast rights of the Australian Open till 2014.

The new contract signed between ESS and Tennis Australia covers the entire region for 2008, including China. From 2009 the rights will cover 23 Asian countries with the exception of China.

The rights cover cable and satellite, IPTV, DTH and terrestrial rights.

The channel which has held the right to the tournament since 2002, will also have the rights for new media platforms such as mobile telephony and Internet. The network tennis portfolio includes Wimbledon, throughout Asia, the French Open, in South Asia, the ATP Masters Series, which comprises 10 of the best tennis tournaments outside of the Grand Slams and the Hyundai Hopman Cup, the only ITF official international mixed teams competition.

The channel will also begin to air shows including Destination Tennis which features best places for tennis vacations on and off the court and No Strings, a behind-the-scenes, up close and personal look at some of the world’s biggest tennis stars.
