Research & Development Yahoo launches lab in Bangalore
The Yahoo Labs will focus on the advanced end of the spectrum working on new technologies and algorithms. Our Bureau Bangalore, March 4 In a bid to achieve excellence in “next generation” search technology, Yahoo! Inc has expanded its India R&D operations with the launch of Yahoo! Labs in Bangalore. Yahoo! Labs is proposed to be a “centre of excellence for next generation search and advertising technologies focussed on making the Web more relevant and simple for users and advertisers.” Dr Rajeev Rastogi will be the Vice-President and head of the new lab; this is Yahoo’s sixth lab globally. Prior to Yahoo!, Dr Rastogi was the founding director of Bells Labs India. Dr Prabhakar Raghavan, SVP and Head of Yahoo! Research, said, “While Yahoo! R&D offers a gamut of research activities, the Yahoo! Labs will focus on the advanced end of the spectrum working on new technologies and algorithms… Yahoo! Labs-Bangalore intends to build a world-class team, focussed on delivering valuable insights.” Hiring IndiaHiring activities have commenced at Yahoo! India. At this point of time, there are 150-200 job openings, said Mr Pranesh Anthapur, COO – Yahoo! India R&D, across Yahoo! R&D, Yahoo! Labs and other India operations. Evading questions on the recent firings in Yahoo! India, Mr Anthapur said Yahoo! India R&D has grown 50 per cent year-on-year on the basis of its headcount and this year too there are indications for similar or better growth. The company will recruit aggressively not only from institutions such as the IITs and IISc, but also from regional institutes and institutions. Dr Rajeev Rastogi, who heads the new Yahoo! Labs, said the company would also look at hiring from universities abroad and “actively seek out” Indians — especially PhDs — looking to come back to India.
