Standards & Benchmarks Gamma Agro readies Rs 8-cr irradiation facility Our Bureau Hyderabad, March 14 Gamma Agro-Medical Processing Pvt Ltd has set up a Rs 8-crore food irradiation plant at the Export Promotion Industrial Park at Pashamylaram in Medak district. Addressing a press conference here on, Mr P.B. Kaginalli, Managing Director, said the plant would be very useful for farmers and exporters of agricultural, medical, herbal and spice products. Several countries in the world have put in place certain norms that necessitated all the imported food and some other consumables to undergo a process called irradiation. Expensive proposition“It is difficult for exporters to establish facilities on their own as it is highly expensive. Our facility would prove to be a common facility for all the exporters,” he said. The irradiation process involves passing of highly penetrating gamma rays through the target objects. The rays would destroy or inactivate insects, insect ova, pathogenic bacteria and fungus. This would enhance the shelf-life of food products, without changing their colour, flavour, texture or nutritional values. “The project is approved by the Mumbai-based Atomic Energy Regulatory Board,” he said.
