Trine Game Studios plans game release

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore, May 18 Trine Game Studios, the wholly owned game development division of Trine Animation Studios, is planning its maiden PC and console game release titled ‘Streets of Mumbai’ before August-end. Thereafter, it plans to introduce at least three new PC and console games every year.

The company, promoted brothers Mr Somil and Mr Sangam Gupta, is in talks with distribution partners and marketing agencies to channelise its offerings.

Its Managing Director, Mr Somil Gupta, told Business Line that the company would focus on PC and console games as there were not many players in India in this space.

The Guptas, after a brief stint in the US, returned to India and set up Trine Animation Studio in 2006 investing about Rs 9 crore. It is now planning to widen its presence with the establishment of a studio-cum-development centre in Delhi and another office in Mumbai. “The Delhi centre would start functioning by September-October. We have invested close to Rs 20 crore towards infrastructure set up and equipments,” he said.

On the second office in Mumbai, he said: “It is a set up for visual effects and animation. Projects we work on here are completely outsourced jobs.” Trine currently employs 200 developers. The company plans to double the headcount by March 2010.

Asked why he preferred to return and start this venture in India, Mr Somil said “the cost of production is at least five times cheaper than the US or Europe; the gaming and animation industry is still in a nascent stage and there is opportunity to grow and establish the Trine brand; India has a huge youth population.”

“We will focus on developing games based on Indian environment and culture and in different Indian languages,” he added.
