Chennai, Aug. 27 The Reliance-ADAG company Adlabs has planned a clutch of multiplex projects in Chennai, including a 1.3-lakh sq ft mall.

The company has in the pipeline three multiplex projects with 17 screens spread across Chennai cutting across various market segments including North Chennai, Central Chennai and on the Old Mahabalipuram Road on the outskirts of the city. These projects are in various stages of approval.

According to company officials, Adlabs has planned one multiplex on Mint Street in the Sowcarpet area where six screens are planned. This will mark the launch of a modern entertainment complex in North Chennai which is one of the city’s oldest areas .

Another multiplex with five screens is coming up along with a 1.3-lakh sq ft commercial complex at Royapettah on the YMCA grounds. The commercial space will largely be earmarked for retail. A third proposal is for six screens planned on the IT corridor, the Old Mahabalipuram Road.

The OMR multiplex is coming up close to the Siruseri IT Park.

These projects mark the entry of one of India’s largest cinema chains into Chennai. Adlabs, which also operates cinemas in the US and Malaysia, is an integrated player in the entertainment industry with interests in creating content for the screen and television, processing, digital services and distribution.

In South India, Adlabs operates 17 cinemas and 33 screens.

In Tamil Nadu, the company operates nine cinemas and is present in Coimbatore and Puducherry.

It operates four cinemas in Andhra Pradesh and three in Karnataka. Adlabs operates more than 70 multiplexes and theatres, which it owns, operates through joint ventures or has acquired on lease through property owners and developers.

Chennai has attracted the interest of most of the national level multiplex operators. The entry of multiplex operators is only limited by the delivery of completed mall space.
