Software Government - Policy Govt to set up centre of excellence for animation, gaming Our Bureau Hyderabad, Nov. 7 The Union Government is finalising a plan to set up a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for animation, gaming and visual effects industry soon. Ms Sangeeta Singh, Director in the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, said the draft plan to establish the CoE was ready in the public-private partnership mode. “The Government would seek private participation after the plan gets finalised,” she said. Addressing a session on Global Partnerships in Animation and Gaming at the Nasscom Animation and Gaming India 2008 here on Friday, she said there was need for standardisation in the industry. Mr Tapaas Chakravari, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DQ Entertainment International, told reporters later that the CoE was expected to be on the lines of the IITs to create quality human resources in various aspects of animation, gaming and visual effects. Ms Sangeeta said the Government was actively pursing bilateral treaties in co-production with several countries, including Canada, Japan, Korea and France. The treaties would help the entrepreneurs in the animation, gaming and visual effects areas in India to join hands with partners in those countries. “On our part, we have ratified the treaty with the UK. While the talks with France are close to conclusion, the Government is yet to hear from Canada. Talks with several other important countries are in various stages,” she said. “Even without these bilateral arrangements, the entrepreneurs can go ahead with their business plans. But the official treaties would give their projects national status in the respective countries,” the Director said. She, however, pointed out that absence of a treaty with a particular country didn’t mean that the business pacts were not valid. “Lack of a bilateral arrangement is not a hindrance,” she added.
