Cinema ‘Indo-UK film treaty evokes tremendous interest’ Our Bureau Chennai, Dec. 1 The Indo-UK Film Co-Production Treaty that came into force about three weeks ago has evoked tremendous interest from Indian film producers to shoot in the UK, according to Ms Isabel Davis, Senior Executive, International Strategy and Co-production, UK Film Council. “There are tens of projects waiting to go,” she told Business Line, on the sidelines of a meeting held here recently by the British Deputy High Commission, to sensitise the Indian film industry about the benefits arising out of the treaty. Apart from technical expertise and some splendid locations, the UK also has on offer tax rebate and equity funds. Ms Davis stressed that the benefits were not for only films with British culture as the theme. While there are certain conditions to be met for availing of the tax rebate and access to funds, the film could be on anything. It could, for example, be a Hindi film shot in India, she said. She said there are a number of funds that provide equity support to a producer. Literature provided by the British Deputy High Commission says that the UK post-production sector “ranks alongside the US as one of the top visual special effects provider for the global film industry”. The UK post-production industry has an annual turnover of $2.6 billion. The sector has about 1,000 companies and employs some 15,000 people. There are a number of ‘screen agencies’ that provide assistance to a foreign film company. They get permissions, hire cameras and crews, help find locations and assist in post-production. These screen agencies could be of immense help to an Indian company that wants to shoot in the UK, many speakers at the meeting said. More Stories on : Cinema
