New Delhi , Sept. 8

The Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Communications has earmarked an investment of Rs 500 crore for expanding its telecommunications infrastructure in Tamil Nadu over the next 15 months.

This will take the total investment in the State from Reliance to Rs 2,000 crore. The company presently covers 650 towns in Tamil Nadu and is targeting to double the number of towns covered over the next 15 months. This will take Reliance's TN network signal coverage to 1 lakh sq.km.

Reliance Communications' spokesperson told Business Line, "Network expansion in existing and newer regions is a continuous process in order to provide quality and affordable telecom services to our many million customers."

Mr Anil Ambani is likely to make an announcement to this effect in Chennai on Saturday where he will be participating in the CII-sponsored Connect 2006. The company is planning to add close to 1.6 million lines in Chennai and Tamil Nadu. At present, Reliance has 1.8 million subscribers in Tamil Nadu.

The investment being made in the State is roughly 10 per cent of the company's overall outlay for telecom business.

Call centre plans

Reliance Communications is also in the process of increasing the seating capacity in its Chennai call centre.

Apart from a 4,000-seater call centre at its headquarters in Navi Mumbai, Reliance has a smaller call centre at Chennai with a capacity of 300 seats.

The Chennai Call Centre will be made the hub for handling customer queries from the company's operations in the whole of South India.

The company has also applied for a licence to offer GSM-based cellular services in the State.
