Privatisation will not lead to staff pruning: Rudy

Kochi , Sept. 19

THE Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Mr Rajiv Pratap Rudy, has reiterated that there will not be any retrenchment of employees of the Airport Authority of India on account of the privatisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports.

Allaying fears of the employees, the Minister said that the working conditions of all employees would be protected. There is no proposal of total privatisation and only certain areas would be entrusted to private parties.

The whole process of privatisation of airports is a part of larger economic reforms taken up by the Government in the last few years, he said.

Participating in a meet, the press programme organised by the Ernakulam Press Club here on Friday, Mr Rudy reminded the AAI employees that the stalling of the nation's aviation sector would have major economic impact. He hoped that the issue would be resolved as the Ministry is holding talks with the striking people on September 23.

The privatisation of airports, he said is the need of the hour as the country is going ahead with creating international hubs. To become world class airports, Indian airports had to provide world-class facilities such as in the case of Singapore, London and Frankfurt, he said.

The Minister also pointed out that the Ministry has also lined up 10 other non-metro airports including Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode in Kerala by inviting consultancy bids.

According to Mr Rudy, most of the State Governments are coming with green field projects in the joint sector.
