THE raids conduced on outlets selling counterfeit products by the Economic Offence Wing of the Delhi Police yielded counterfeit Duracell batteries worth Rs 42 lakh. The raids were based on a complaint moved by Gillette India.
According to a company communiqué, these inferior quality look-alikes of its brand had been manufactured in China and illegally brought into the country through Nepal. In fact, some of the Chinese exporters have been misusing the Indo-Nepal bilateral treaty for dumping inferior and fake consumer products in India.
According to Mr Anshuman Sharma, Vice-President, Legal & Corporate Affairs, Gillette India Ltd, "the biggest victim is the consumer who is being sold fake and counterfeit products. The Government currently earns nearly Rs 30 crore from Gillette on account of duties and taxes. This amount could substantially increase by checking the sale of these counterfeits and grey products."
