THE Eastern Naval Command, with its headquarters here, has so far deployed 14 ships and 12 helicopters for tsunami relief work and "the operation will continue as long as required,'' Vice-Admiral O.P. Bansal, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, has said.
Briefing the press here on Wednesday about the relief work, the Vice-Admiral said, "It is going to be a long haul for the ENC and the civil administration in the affected States and union territories''.
He said the ENC had sent ships to Sri Lanka and Indonesia as well for relief work. Search and surveillance operations, restoration of infrastructure and carrying relief material to the victims were the main tasks the ENC was engaged in.
``The ENC helped in clearing the Chennai and Nagapattinam harbours. In Visakhapatnam there was not much damage. There were, however, a few obstructions, which we cleared. The jetties and piers in the Tamil Nadu harbours were badly damaged,'' he said.
He said the Andaman and Nicobar islands were the worst hit and he had conducted an aerial survey of the area. "Our vessels and personnel are engaged in relief work there. We may have to stay there for a longer period,'' he said.
He said a relief camp had been set up by the ENC in Trincomalee in Sri Lanka. In all, he said, the ENC had so far sent 1,547 tonnes of relief materials.
