`Good scope for silicon materials industry foray'

Preethi. J

Bangalore , Sept. 14

India has an opportunity to enter the silicon materials industry. "India may get into the materials process, especially with the rise of the solar cell industry here," said Mr Vinod K. Agarwal, Chairman of SemIndia, speaking to Business Line at the sidelines of a round table discussion on `Changes in Semiconductor: Industrial Landscape and implications for India' organised in the city recently.

Most solar cells are based on silicon wafers, which are also used in the making of chips. India's growing competency in the solar cell arena is expected to drive the silicon materials making industry in the country.

The silicon materials industry sells the wafers produced to the integrated circuit (IC) industry to manufacture customised integrated chips, which turn out to be processors for the mobile or computer.

Pure silicon is obtained from sand after a lengthy process of electrolysis (or gas-phase decomposition), purification, doping, and other chemical reactions.
