Launches infotech finishing school in Chennai

Chennai , Dec. 4

3Edge Solutions has tied up with Cognizant Technology Solutions to provide ready-to-work graduates. It has launched an information technology finishing school in Chennai to train graduates on employability skills, including technical and communication skills.

Initially, the tie-up would supplement off-campus hiring for Cognizant from tier-II and tier-III cities. This is the first such tie up for Cognizant, according to Mr Vaidya Nathan, Assistant Vice-President, Cognizant.

3Edge, a unit of Tra-augment People Solutions Pvt Ltd, will look at new talent pools for recruitment. "3Edge will select engineering graduates from cities that Cognizant does not hire from (either through campus recruitment or off-campus hiring)," he said.

Training programmes

Two training programmes lasting eight weeks (for computer science and IT graduates) and 11 weeks (for non-IT graduates) are planned. These include a three-week foundation course followed by technical and behavioural training. Students will also work on industry projects during the programme. "We want to make students ready for working on projects from the day they join a company," said Mr Prasad Kolisetty, Director, 3Edge Solutions. The eight-week and 11 week programmes cost Rs 35,000 and Rs 45,000 respectively.

Students completing the course will be evaluated by Cognizant. Those joining the company will undergo shorter induction training as compared to other fresh recruits.

Candidates not selected by Cognizant will be hired by 3Edge for industry projects until they are placed with some IT company. "We are also in talks with two large IT companies for implementing this training programme," said Mr Kolisetty.

By mid-2007, 3Edge plans to increase its monthly intake to 100 candidates from the present 60 candidates. Its city-based training centre can seat 180 students and the company is planning to set up two more 180-seat centres, each costing about Rs 1.5 crore, in South India by mid-2007. Possible locations include Vishakhapatnam, Tiruchi and Kochi, he said.
