The Hindu Business Line : Young entrepreneurs mull strategies for Mangalore's growth

Mangalore Jan. 21 The `generation next' entrepreneurs of Mangalore seem to be on a path for making the region ideal destination for investments thus helping in growth of the area.

The `Mangalore Today Conclave 2007' on the theme `Gen Next: The future', which saw participation from young entrepreneurs from various sectors of society, came out with some important suggestions for the development of the region.

Mr Rohith Bhat, Chief Executive Officer of Robosoft Technologies, Udupi - a first generation entrepreneur, who was presented with the `Outstanding Entrepreneur of 2007' award - urged industry to take the advantage of abundant talent pool in the region.

He made an appeal to those Mangaloreans who have settled in other parts of the country and the world to come back and start enterprises in their native land. Several banks in the country originated in this region, and they are still going strong. Many more such success stories can be replicated in other sectors also, he said.

Presenting the views on higher education sector, Mr Vishal Hegde of Nitte Group of Education Institutions, urged the Government to come out with a roadmap on education sector. On the entry of foreign universities to the country, he said foreign universities are used to work in unregulated system. Indian educational institutions would be left out in the race unless they are given a level-playing field. Mr Binay R. Shetty, Director of New Medical Centre, Abu Dhabi, termed non-resident Indians as the unofficial ambassadors of the country in the host nations. He offered to support the generation next entrepreneurs from Mangalore, if they are ready to venture out.

FDI attraction

He made an appeal to the Karnataka Government to step up its role to attract FDI to destinations such as Mangalore. "Otherwise, the neighbouring States may garner that FDI share," he said.

Mr Sanjith Naik, Executive Director of Mahabaleshwara Promoters and Builders Pvt Ltd, stressed the need for a master plan for Mangalore, as the city is all set to witness a huge influx of people in the coming years. The stakeholders such as builders, citizens and the authorities should come together and work out a long-term plan for the development of the region.
