Wants to steer clear of pharma cos

Dr R.A. Mashelkar

Mumbai March 18 Despite several companies waiting in the wings to get on board Dr R.A. Mashelkar, former head at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the man on the centre-stage seems inclined towards just two of them.

"Two of the companies that have shown interest and I am inclined towards are Tata Motors and Reliance," he told Business Line, adding that he needs clearance from the Government before he joins the board of any company.

Tata Motors officials were not available for more details. Last month, Reliance Industries Ltd had got approval from its board to appoint Dr Mashelkar as an independent director on the board, pending Government approval.

A Government official has to wait two years before moving to the corporate sector, he said. He reiterated that he would be able to join the boards of these companies only after getting approval from the government. After 30 years with the CSIR, Dr Mashelkar retired last year as its Director-General.

Dr Mashelkar said he was steering clear of pharma companies.
