Chennai June 24 Sun Microsystems has launched a server priced below Rs 1 lakh to tap the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are likely to adopt IT in a big way. The Rs 75,000 server, the first sub-Rs 1 lakh server from Sun Microsystems, has provisions to have a web server, application server and an operating system, according to Mr M.B. Sam, Director, Marketing, Sun Microsystems India. The AMD-based server will be enough for an SME with revenue of around Rs 50 crore. It has a storage space of over 450 GB, enough to have applications like web and mail, and business applications like mini ERP (enterprise resource planning) or mini CRM (customer relationship management) software, he said. The US-based Sun Microsystems, a $13-billion company, provides network computing infrastructure solutions that include computer systems (hardware and software), data management, support services and educational services. Indian SMEs are likely to spend around $8 billion on IT this year. There are over three million small-scale units in India and of this, around 30,000 need basic IT requirements for the next four years, he said.
Some of the small companies have a few computers with basic applications like finance, email and accounting. However, once the revenue reaches Rs 50 crore, they target doubling the business in three to four years.
This requires bigger IT infrastructure with a presence on the Web and online connectivity to customers and vendors. Sun provides SMEs with a package that consists of server, storage and software, he said.
Sun's addressable market was around 20 per cent of the $8 billion IT spend estimated for Indian SMEs. Sun, along with Cisco, Symantec and Ingram Micro, was going to major cities to provide SMEs the entire IT solution, including server, software and an anti-virus solution.
There will be a partner in every major city and, if required, ICICI will provide financial assistance to potential customers, he said.
