Singapore to Japan cable link by June next: VSNL

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Nov. 2 Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd said the construction of its submarine cable — linking Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan with up to 3.8 terrabits of capacity — will be done by the US-based Tyco Telecommunications.

The link is scheduled for completion by June 2008, said a statement from the company. This cable will fill in the Singapore-Japan gap and also complete the company’s India-Asia-US link, complementing the Tata Indicom Cable System and the TGN-Pacific cable system.

Future Extensions

The TGN-Intra Asia cable will have an additional connection to the Philippines and Vietnam, said a statement from the company. VSNL is also evaluating plans to develop future extensions of the cable into Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan and China.

“This is the first and only cable system that provides a direct fibre link between Singapore and Japan,” said Mr Vinod Kumar, President, Global Data Solutions, of the company.
