Mumbai, Dec. 22 Eaton Corporation has rolled out its plans for expanding its engineering centre in Pune, making it a strategic hub for the company’s global operations.

The centre will mainly look into advanced automotive component technology and aerospace technology. “We will hire 1,000 engineers and increase the strength of our engineering centre to 1,500 in two-three years. We are in talks with IITs and engineering colleges in Pune and Bangalore,” Mr Shyam P. Kambeyanda, MD of Eaton Corporation India, told Business Line.

Diversified industrial manufacturer, the US-based $12.4-billion Eaton is a global player in automotive component business, power control systems, and hydraulics.

“The engineering centre will support product development and service development related to the global operations of Eaton. We will work in tandem with Eaton’s R&D centre in the US,” said Mr Ramanath I. Ramakrishnan, General Manager and Head of Eaton Engineering Centre, Pune.

Recruitment plans

“We are hiring fresh graduates in engineering branches such as mechanical, electronic, software and power controls. We give emphasis on analytical capabilities in digital prototyping in our Pune centre,” he said.

“There is a huge talent pool in India. The expansion plan is part of Eaton’s capability building. And there is also certain cost advantage in it,” he said. “We will offer opportunities for continuing education for our recruits. We are in touch with universities to facilitate doctoral research for our engineers in the advanced laboratories we have set up in Pune,” Mr Ramakrishnan said.

Tech innovation

Eaton has built up a huge infrastructure for its engineering centre in Pune and already has a 500-strong workforce which is primarily looking into its global products. The centre is involved in the development of Eaton’s innovations in hybrid technology and other fuel conservation technologies for automotives. However, Eaton’s top executives did not divulge the investment details. The company will begin production of truck transmissions at its Ranjangaon plant in April 2008. The company, which stepped up its operations in India in the recent years, is currently supplying UPS for large system applications and steering control units for the hydraulic systems in the country.
