SunGard to expand India operations

Shamik Paul

Bangalore, May 19

SunGard, a provider of software and processing solutions for financial services, higher education and the public sector, said it would significantly expand operations in India this year and launch some of its products and services here.

Mr Mack Gill, President, SunGard Technology Services, said the company plans to grow its team strength from about 1,500 at present to almost 2,000 by the year-end. The majority of additions would be in the product development, product engineering, testing and support services teams.

Additions to the sales and marketing team would also be made to support the launch of more SunGard products in India as also to support growth in APAC, Japan, and Middle East, Mr Gill added.

The Pennsylvania-based company expects its India operations to drive its growth as a regional hub.

India, along with Sun- Gard's China centre, would provide marketing, presales, sales, technical sales support, and professional services teams. Mr Gill said SunGard's initial product launches in India would be in the areas of wealth management, asset management, insurance, brokerage and clearance, capital markets and investment banking, and employee benefits administration. It would also launch key products and solutions for the higher education and public sector domains.

Multinational companies in India as well as local fi- nancial institutions will be target customers for SunGard, Mr Gill said adding that the company foresees strong growth continuing in 2009.

He said SunGard's solutions are typically part of core IT spends. The impact of the slowdown has been minimal and the company is feeling good about its competitive position, given its wide solutions portfolio, he added.

SunGard has about 400 offices in 30 countries and employs more than 17,000 people. It reported revenue of $1.3 billion in the quarter ending March 31, 2008.
