Judge recuses from Reliance case

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Nov. 4

The withdrawal of Mr Justice R. V. Raveendran on Wednesday on moral grounds from a Bench of the Supreme Court hearing the gas dispute involving the Ambani brothers, is unlikely to cause a major delay in the case.

He has been replaced by Mr Justice B. Sudershan Reddy.

The Chief Justice, Mr Justice K. G. Balakrishnan, who is heading the three-judge Bench, earlier rejected a request by Mr Ram Jethmalani (senior counsel for the Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Natural Resources Ltd who feared such a delay), to have the matter heard by the remaining two judges (Mr Justice Balakrishnan and Mr Justice P. Sathasivam).

The Chief Justice said since it was already decided that the matter would be heard by a three-judge Bench, there would not be any change. The new Bench will resume the hearing on Thursday.

Mr Harish Salve, senior counsel for the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), will state his arguments all over again in a concise manner so that the new judge gets fully acquainted with what has transpired so far.

Mr Justice Raveendran said that though his daughter had joined the Bangalore office of the law firm AZB & Partners on September 1, 2009, he learnt only on Tuesday evening that the law firm is advising the Mukesh Ambani group on other matters such as global mergers and acquisitions.
