Roadways Web Extras - Infrastructure NHAI traffic data accessible on real time basis Mamuni Das
New Delhi , Oct. 23 The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials can now access detailed traffic data for some of their toll plazas almost on a real time basis. They can get updated data on their Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)-based phone screens and computers, which are connected to the toll plazas through a wide area network (WAN). The move would help NHAI get investors for its road projects by improving the traffic flow data collection and projection for various highway stretches. For instance, at any given point of time, officials can find out the exact number of vehicles that have moved through a particular toll plaza in a given time period, the toll revenues collected, number of vehicles by their classification (such as jeeps, trucks, buses, cars), amongst others. To do so, officials need to feed in details like the kind of information they want, the time period for which they want such information in their Intranet application in computers or VoIP phones, said top NHAI officials. VoIP phones, which transmit voice over the Internet or IP-based networks, also have a screen where the queries can be fed and the results obtained. The data is available on the NHAI's Intranet for 40 plazas now and can be accessed by senior NHAI officials across the country. For 15 of these 40 toll locations, officials can also access the data using their IP phones. The 15 sites include Chennai bypass, Naini bridge (Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh), Karnal, Dauraha, Shambu, Kaza and Patti Padu (Andhra Pradesh). Such details are fed into the computers at the toll plazas and uploaded into the central server every two hours. This has been made possible through a networking project being implemented by NHAI through Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), Datakraft, CMC and Wipro. While BSNL is responsible for providing the bandwidth through its telecom network, Datakraft is responsible for the local and wide area network connectivity, CMC is the hardware supplier and Wipro is the project supervision consultant.
