Rs 100 cr bonus for MP tendu leaf collectors

BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a bonus of Rs 100 crore to tendu leaf collectors this year besides increasing the collection rate of Sal seeds to Rs 1000 per quintal.

The collection rate of sal seeds, which was Rs 450 per quintal for the last five years, has now been raised to Rs 1000, an official release said adding that this decision was taken at the annual general meeting of the Laghu Vanopaj Sangh.

The Sangh Chairman and Tribal Welfare Minister Mr Kunwar Vijay Shah informed the meeting that statistics of last three years show that the Vanopaj Sangh is heading towards earning progressive profit.

"This year Rs 100 crore bonus would be distributed to Tendu leaf collections by the Sangh," he said.

It was also decided that Tendu leaf collectors would be provided with slippers, water can, pressure cooker and umbrellas.

The Chairman also informed that in the two-year-period the rate of tendu leaf collection has been increased from Rs 400 to Rs 550 per standard bag.

In view of problems faced by forest dwellers, the state government has taken the decision to restart sal seeds collection from the year 2008 after conducting a scientific study.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr V R Khare, Principal Secretary, Forests Mr Prashant Mehta and other officers were present at the meeting. - PTI
