Mahindra Satyam may buy firm in S. Africa

Mahindra Satyam is looking at acquiring a company in South Africa. The IT company, which is already present there, is reportedly eyeing a firm in areas such as infrastructure management.

The company is expanding its presence in Africa, Latin America and Asia through acquisitions and partnerships.

When asked to comment, C. P. Gurnani, Chief Executive Officer of Mahindra Satyam, confirmed that the company is shopping for an acquisition in South Africa. He, however, did not indicate the likely size of the deal or time frame for such acquisition.

The company is in silent period ahead of the announcement of the financial results for the fourth quarter of 2012-13 in the first week of May.

Dependable markets

IT industry body Nasscom has said that markets such as Africa, Asia and Latin America are emerging as dependable markets for Indian IT companies that are facing challenges in the US and European markets.

In February this year, Mahindra Satyam acquired a majority stake in Brazilian company Complex IT, a strong SAP consulting player in the region. Besides tapping the domestic market in Brazil, the company wanted to position it as a global delivery centre for its customers in Latin America.

“The Brazilian acquisition helped us get about 400 SAP consultants. In Africa, Tech Mahindra has presence through its BPO operations. We can further build our strengths there through expanding Mahindra Satyam presence there,” a top Mahindra Satyam executive said.

A month earlier, the company announced a tie-up with TechMatrix of Japan to jointly target growth areas in the healthcare market and to provide cloud-based healthcare solutions.

A TechMatrix subsidiary, ICHIGO LLC, will offer its Teleradiology network infrastructure product line and NOBORI, its cloud service for Medical and Healthcare information, while Mahindra Satyam will host the cloud and mobile-based services in Singapore and Malaysia and provide direct sales and IT services to clients throughout ASEAN region.
