Announcements Corporate - Announcements Maruti 800, Esteem, Omni costlier Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, Jan. 28 DELIVERING a bad news for prospective car buyers, Maruti Udyog Ltd on Monday raised prices of some of its cars, particularly the largest selling 800-cc car, by a maximum of Rs 8,835. Maruti has raised prices of all the variants of the 800-cc car, the Omni van and the Esteem with immediate effect, a company statement said. Prices of the Wagon R, Zen and Alto have not been raised, it said. The maximum raise has been on the 800-cc deluxe model, which will now cost Rs 2,73,530 in Delhi showrooms, dearer by Rs 8,835. The price of 800-cc EX model has been raised by Rs 8,677 to Rs 2,52,005. Price of the Euro-II-compliant 800-cc Standard version has gone up by Rs 3,753 to Rs 2,21,415, the statement said. Esteem prices have gone up by Rs 4,161 on the LX version and Rs 4,696 on the VX version. The 800-cc car and its variants, the Omni van and the Esteem constitute about 55 per cent of all car sales by Maruti Udyog, the country's largest car-maker with over 60 per cent market share. There has been no move yet by other manufacturers, like Hyundai Motor, Tata Engineering and Fiat India to raise prices. "We are still working on it. We have been working on it for some time now. We will pass on only the bare minimum to the customer and we will try to raise efficiency and cut costs," Hyundai's Director (Marketing), Mr B.V.R. Subbu said. A Tata Engineering spokesman also said that the company has no immediate plans for raising prices. Fiat officials were not immediately available for comment. It may be noted that earlier this month, Ford India Ltd and General Motors India Ltd raised prices of some models. The raising of car prices by Maruti and other manufacturers of small cars has been in the air for nearly a month now. Monday's price rise does not include the Baleno sedan and its station wagon version, the Altura. Maruti, a joint venture between the Indian Government and Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp, raised the prices of these two models in the first week of January along with adding new features in these two variants.
