Mumbai-based institute to offer course in jewellery crafting

Mumbai , April 22

WITH India being a major centre in the world for gems and jewellery and with exports likely to touch $16 billion in 2007, interest in courses on gems and jewellery is growing.

The latest to join the training fray is the just launched Indian Institute of Jewellery, promoted by Modern Mills Ltd, Mumbai, which has entered into a technical collaboration agreement with the California Institute to Jewellery Training , Sacramento, US, to offer extensive training in jewellery crafting and manufacturing.

The institute, which is based in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai, will invite admissions in May 2004. The course consists of four modules and will commence in June.

According to Mr Vijay Jatia, Chairman, Modern Mills, and founder/promoter of IIJ, said, ``Today, India is forging ahead as a major centre for gem and jewellery trade with 11 out of 12 diamonds set in the world being cut and polished in India. However, only 1 per cent of jewellery is from India. There is a huge demand for a trained skilled work force to take that one per cent upwards."

He added that the institute had been set up to meet this demand from the industry and would offer a comprehensive course in manufacturing, with the California institute offering assistance in terms of technical support and the curriculum.

The course will accommodate both part-time and full-time students. Additional `fast track' courses of 32 and 16 weeks will also be introduced. With the modules being project-oriented, students will have hands-on experience.
