Freescale ramping up headcount

V. Rishi Kumar

Develops a triple play broadband solution

Hyderabad April 4 Freescale Semiconductor, the $6.4-billion embedded technology solutions provider, is bullish on India as it expands its research and development mandate.

The Country Manager of Freescale, Mr Ganesh Guruswamy, said in about two and half years of independent functioning after the company was spun off from Motorola, its Indian R&D headcount has grown from barely 200 to 950 now.

Based on the business prospects, it expects to add about 500 people more during the year and thereafter possibly double that to about 3,000 within two years.

Speaking to Business Line here along with Mr Subind Kumar, Design Manager, Freescale Semiconductor India, Mr Guruswamy said the company would touch more people in many ways be it through consumer electronic devices or automobiles or even digital lifestyle products, many of them powered by the Freescale technology.

With manufacturing units in the US, Scotland, Europe and Japan, Mr Guruswamy said India R&D is playing a strategic role in transportation and automotive, networking and systems computing and wireless. Wireless is amongst the fastest growing market in the region.

With its automotive solutions division, they are working on a wide range of areas that include vehicle telematics, onboard communications systems, antilock braking systems and fuel injection systems. Some of these solutions are being extended to automotives in India, including two-wheeler companies like Bajaj Auto.

Freescale believes that its innovation is directed to make world a smarter place to live be it by touching consumers through electronic devices and mobile phones, automotive solutions, or in vehicle and healthcare systems. For instance, handsets like Moto Razr have been powered by our technology, he said.

TRIPLE PLAY SYSTEM

Designers at Freescale have developed a cost competitive chip that offers triple play over optical fibre network. This helps in forwarding data for several applications that would be useful for triple play— voice, video and data— broadband services to home and small businesses.

Mr Guruswamy said this technology supports the convergence of Internet Protocol (IP) over optical networks, offering high connection speeds. This would be ideal for bandwidth hungry applications such as HDTV (high definition TV) and video on demand.

Referred to as Gigabit Passive Optical network is being considered as a new solution to growing challenges that consumers face due to last mile infrastructure.
