Bengal Govt woos tech companies

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Nov. 28 The West Bengal Minister for Information technology, Dr Debesh Das, today said “all problems at Nandigram have been addressed. Please go by the experience of industry.”

Speaking at Infocomm-2007, the West Bengal Minister said that the Central Government data shows that the State was one of the most peaceful in the country and offered ideal investment climate. This is being further strengthened by development of infrastructure.

Referring to the sun-set clause for the STPI units, he said that the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who is also a Polit Bureau member of the CPI(M), has written to the Centre to continue the concessions extended to software companies under STPI scheme by 10 more years.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Das said the extension of concessions would be beneficial to small and medium IT enterprises in particular.

Land prices

Defending high prices of land in West Bengal, Mr Das said that the State Government would allot an alternative site to Infosys, which did not take a “costly piece of land” to match the company’s pricing requirement. However, TCS had bought the same piece of 40-acre land at Rs 1.5 crore an acre.
