Mr Rupert Murdoch

Mumbai , March 19

MR Rupert Murdoch, Chairman, News Corp, who is on a five-day visit to India, arrived in Mumbai on Saturday.

Mr Murdoch is visiting the country after five years.

He is on a private visit, an official of Star said but added that he is slated to hold internal team meetings at Star's new corporate office at Mahalaxmi, a Mumbai suburb.

There is a likelihood of a meeting with the Tata Group, but the Star spokesperson did not confirm it. "A meeting is being sought with the Tatas," he said.

Star and the Tata Group had set up a 20:80 joint venture for making a foray into the direct-to-home television space. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry had referred the joint venture to the Department of Company Affairs to check if it confirms with the existing guidelines. A formal dinner has been organised at Mumbai's Taj Mahal Hotel where Mr Murdoch is staying. Some of the invitees to this dinner may include Tata Group officials, sources said.

Mr Murdoch is scheduled to spend three days in New Delhi from Monday. He is expected to meet the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr Jaipal Reddy, and other senior government officials.

Mr Aveek Sarkar, chief of Anand Bazar Patrika Group, partner in Star News channel, is also said to be hosting a dinner for Mr Murdoch during his Delhi leg of visit.
