Health, I&B ministers to discuss ban on smoking scenes

New Delhi , June 5

THE Health Minister, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, and the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister, Mr S. Jaipal Reddy, are expected to meet later this month to discuss the implementation of the ban on smoking scenes shown in cinema and television.

According to Government sources, the critical issue is how the Ministries would ensure that television channels and film companies adhere to the new policy. "There is the problem of who would monitor this," they said.

The Government is unlikely to revoke the ban, even as the I&B Ministry has expressed difficulty in implementing it. The Health Ministry had earlier written to the I&B Ministry about the ban before the notification, the officials said.

However, the ban on smoking scenes has raised a controversy with a certain section in the media believing that this would hamper creative freedom. Others tend to agree with the WHO report that showing leading characters smoking promotes this habit among the youth.
