Deadline for ban on smoking scenes may be extended

New Delhi , Sept. 22

THE Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry has sought to extend the October 2, 2005, deadline set for implementing the ban on smoking scenes in films and on television. This was conveyed by officials of the I&B Ministry to the Health Ministry at a meeting. The film and television fraternity has been opposing the ban as it feels that it will hamper creative freedom. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has also expressed reservations on the ban.

About two months ago, the I&B Ministry and Health Ministry had agreed to the ban.

It was then agreed that smoking scenes should not be shown on screen, disclaimers on smoking and consumption of tobacco products should be inserted in old films and television serials, and public service campaigns featuring film personalities must be created to address these concerns.
