The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has lauded the Maharashtra Government for acting swiftly in the recent Pepsico Pune incident thus preventing a Manesar-like mishap, where a senior official was burned alive by irked workers.

In August last a general manager (human resource) of Pepsico Holding India Private Ltd at Ranjangaon near Pune MIDC was abducted by a group of youths who wanted the company's transport contract for pick-up and dropping off its employees.

The immediate action taken by the State Government and the police department in rescuing the HR manager has helped “re-affirm investors’ faith in the State”, the industry body said.

This incident comes immediately after the incident in which employees of Everest Industries in Nashik were manhandled and injured, CII said in a statement. It also added that the issues related to Industrial Relations (IR) should be settled through amicable dialogue which helps in creating an atmosphere of trust and transparency.

Maharashtra has a stable regulatory environment, strong human capital base, easy access to capital and presence of some of the biggest industrial houses. It has also been attracting highest cumulative foreign direct investment. Therefore, such incidents, if not dealt with, swiftly and decisively may impede flows of both domestic and foreign investments to the State.
