West Bengal Urban Development Minister Firhad (Bobby) Hakim on Monday said that the Centre was forcing multi-system operators to agree to the December 27 deadline for mandatory digitisation of cable TV in the city.

“I want to make it clear that attempts to apply force on MSOs will not be taken lightly,” Hakim said after a meeting with city-based MSOs.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry, in a recent meeting, asked all city-based MSOs to stop beaming analogue signals latest by December 27. Failure to comply would lead to cancellation of MSO licences.

The State Government on the other hand wants MSOs to continue with analogue signals till all 42 lakhs households switch over to the digital mode (installing set top boxes) citing “law and order issues”.
