Setting in motion to provide the popular South Indian dish, idli, and other items at affordable rates, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today launched a series of budget canteens in the city.
This was in line with an announcement made recently to benefit daily wage labourers and others earning substantially low wages.
Jayalalithaa launched the initiative of Chennai Corporation by lighting a lamp at a function here, simultaneously inaugurating 15 such facilities.
The Corporation had proposed opening 200 such canteens that will function from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. where the prices of food such as idli and various cooked rice items have been fixed between one rupee and Rs 5.
The scheme will be implemented through local women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs), a government release said.

Comments:
Government's notoriety for unhygienic practices are well known. TASMAC outlets are glaring example of this. It is more important to be hygienic than not just being cheap. In my opinion health problems are mainly due to unhygienic conditions prevailing and unfit water supply in Tamil Nadu that is crippling the state. This cheap food outlets have been started keeping election in mind
Very good schme.
The poor and needy people can be fed at cheaper
rates and at the same time it is employment
oppurtunites to the SELF HELP Group.
The Hoteliers and Restaurant people in Tamilnadu
are really looting the people.
The Government should fix the maximum price
from the Food items supplied in Hotels
as it was done in Emergency Period
Really a Great Welfare scheme that will be welcomed
by all and people will remember AMMA as Annapurani
as Perunthalaivar Kamaraj is still remembered as
the man who brought the Mid day Meal Scheme.

Why is Jayalalithaa not wearing gloves when the staff does?
If the poor can't afford such basic food items its a shame on us to
supply it as an election gimmick.Instead of finding about the root cause
of such poverty we have been suppressing the poor with their ignorance
for their votes since independence.Give a man a fishing rod to fish
instead of giving him crumbs from your table.Shame on me, shame on the
poor and shame shame on the political class for such utter gutter
standards of governance.
