Brands French major Essilor banks on plastic lens growth Our Bureau Bangalore, July 25 French ophthalmic lens major Essilor International is all set to strengthen its brand while focusing its resources also on expanding its market share in India by stepping up its campaign and increasing the capacity of lens production at its Doddabellapur near here. Essilor India launched its plastic lenses by setting up a manufacturing plant in Doddabellapur near here ten years ago and marketing its popular brands such as Varilux range, Crizal hard multi-coated and Titus Hard coated lenses. Plastic lenses account for only five to six per cent of the estimated 70 million correctional lenses market in India. Essilor aims to increase its share in double digits in the next five years. Mr Xavier Fontanet, Chairman and CEO, Essilor International, said that India accounted for a major share of the 12 per cent market Essilor had in the emerging markets such as China, Eastern Europe and Latin America. Essilor was banking on the huge potential of conversion from glass to plastic lenses for its growth in India. Mr Fontanet said in view of the importance of the market, Essilor emphasises special training to opticians to create awareness about the progressive lenses’ value in enhancing their corrective potential, while helping the users in improving their daily performance in their work.
